I was fortunate to attend Kuits Solicitors’ summer work experience programme in their head offices in Manchester. This opportunity provided me with insights to the firm, as well as enlightened me to various aspects of the law I had previously not considered. This article aims to provide insights into the different departments that I worked with, and provide insights into the firm in general.

My time revealed the essential foundations of a successful national commercial firm. I gained exposure to Corporate and Banking teams, understanding their critical role in facilitating business growth, including mergers, acquisitions, and finance agreements. Similarly, the Commercial Property and Intellectual Property workshops demonstrated how the firm handles the tangible assets (offices, warehouses) and intangible assets (brands, patents) that are vital for any modern business. This confirmed that no single department operates in isolation, notably evidenced through the fact that every major corporate transaction requires input from property specialists.

Beyond the core commercial work, Kuits’ reputation is also built on its specialist groups. The Licensing team stood out, evidencing a unique, nationally-recognised expertise essential for the vibrant leisure and hospitality sector. They mentioned how their work was prominent throughout many established locations in Manchester such as, Turtle Bay, the Alchemist Bar, and Brewdog. Moreover, the firm’s commitment to its clients’ personal affairs was clear from the work in Residential Property, Tax & Probate, and Family law. These departments ensure that the business owners whom Kuits advises receive comprehensive support for their private wealth and affairs. Finally, my time in Litigation and Employment, further highlighted the firm’s dedication to dispute resolution and risk management.

While the departmental work was insightful, the overall friendly culture was the most valuable lesson. The firm operates with a deep sense of commerciality, yet the teams were very approachable and highly collaborative. Observing the workshops demonstrated the need for an ever evolving skillset, with strong commercial awareness and clear communication. The Kuits programme was a valuable step in my aims of becoming a lawyer, providing practical experience to add to my academic studies at the University of Manchester. If you are looking for law, but not the outrageously long hours, then Kuits Solicitors here in Manchester might be the firm for you!
